Derived from generative processes, the project stimulated debate around design, materialisation, and the perception of abstract forms. The project accommodates teaching spaces, offices, and a library, and is encased in a skin of conical stainless steel panels forming the facade. It is linked into the existing VCA building via a public realm that focuses campus circulation and activity. The inherent dynamism of the project is conveyed through the choice of facade material and gradients of colour on the public stair and external canopy, which create a sense of movement and flux between the abstract forms and the ‘reality’ of building technics. The project was awarded the 2004 Australian Institute of Architects prize for Best New Institutional Building.
