Over and Over
ARTWORK BY JULIA GORMAN
ST KILDA, 2004Apublic artwork, designed and documented for artist Julia Gorman.
Attached to the rear of Becton’s Esplanade Apartments in St Kilda, this work comprises an array of steel profiles extracted from photographs of ruined Grecian statues brought back to life by vibrant powder-coated colours. The figures give an optimistic sense of a crowd of individuals holding up the building above while the inclusion of a few headless statues adds a touch of the macabre and the ancient. The figures are designed to give a sense of the diversity of the people of the place while also commenting on the persistence and universality of the human condition.
