Wetlands Discovery Centre Masterplan
EDITHVALE VICTORIA, 2004This master-plan for a discovery centre proposed a series of methods through which the public could gain direct experience of the RAMSAR-listed Edithvale Seaford wetlands.
The Edithvale Seaford Wetlands are the remaining portion of the Carrum Downs wetlands. The wetlands are managed by Melbourne Water, who commissioned this master-plan as a framework to improve public access to and understanding of the wetlands and its flora and fauna. The project was instigated by volunteers who have been maintaining a bird hide on the site for many years.
While the wetlands is protected by a RAMSAR listing, its proximity to built-up areas puts it at risk of negligence and vandalism. Central to the master-plan, then is an ambition to better educate the immediate and broader community about the significance and sensitivity of the wetlands. This was ultimately manifest in an interpretative education centre, designed by us and completed in 2011.
