Minifie van Schaik + Oculus compiled a full consultant team for an expression of interest and were shortlisted to compete in a design competition/tender to propose a new urban face for Melbourne's western edge, Harbour Esplanade.

This four hundred metre stretch of waterfront boulevard running between the Telstra Dome sports stadium and Victoria Harbour, once Melbourne's major port, has now moved downstream to accommodate larger tanker sizes.

Working with a rough budget of AUD$35M to $45M the teams design proposes an uninterrupted boulevard of trees which is then interjected with a series of diverse programs to activate the waters edge.

These include dune pools, a sunken bar, wedding steps, container cafe's, a turf beach, a tree bridge, floating wetlands, harbour pool, water cinema, water courtyards, and a fresh fish market.

The team worked closely with the engineers, quantity surveyor, water sensitive urban designer, integrated traffic planner and project manager to prove up the proposed design.
